Judges is certainly a rough book to read. It's filled with difficult stories of individuals who are called by God but seem like total failures. It's crucial to understand that the reason behind these chaotic narratives of rebellion, abuse, violence, and various depravities is a refusal to love God unconditionally. Whether we admit it or not, we can recognize elements of our own culture in this dark book as well.

The book of Numbers is anything but an Old Testament description of Hebrew arithmetic. It chronicles the very bumpy road from Mt. Sinai to the plains of Moab over a 40 years journey that should've taken just a few short weeks at most. Israel's obstinacy and rebellion can be frustrated to read, until we remember that "we are Israel" and should learn from their mistakes.
